Boating around the San Juans - Part Two

When Captain F takes Bad Boy out on the seas, he seeks out high adventure which translates into lots of speed, far distances, and tricky water conditions. I, on the other hand, prefer slower speeds, shorter distances, and tranquil waters. I also like hugging the coastlines so that I can "ooh" and "aah" at the charming waterfront vacation retreats and villages dotting the shores and the elegant pleasure craft docked out in front of them.

The San Juans are perfect for my needs. There are so many islands - more than 172 identifiable ones - within such close proximity to one another that you can spend days just cruising around each one and learning about and enjoying the unique characteristics of each particular isle. Most of the islands are uninhabited by people or they are preserved as marine parks or wildlife refuges, but all offer enchantingly different landscapes and views.

This time Captain F fulfilled my request, and on August 2nd we spent a leisurely afternoon cruising at an enjoyable speed along the scenic shores of Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juans.

Here are some sights I photographed...

The harbor at Olga...

One of those understated waterfront homes...

Olga Bay...

Orcas has a lot of forests and farmland...

Approaching Rosario Beach Resort area on the East Sound...

Scenes like this are typical: a tree, a cliff, and a boat...

That would be a nice spot to sit and watch the setting sun, wouldn't it?

A big house and a bigger boat...

You'll see lots of kayaks resting on the beaches...

Two sailboats in one of the harbors...

The village of Orcas - this is where the ferry lands...

Entering a quiet inlet...

Cruising from one boat to another and watching the setting sun...

On the way back, we passed Turn Point Lighthouse on Stewart Island...

Ending the trip with a spectacular sunset...
Another great day of boating in the San Juans. Now all we need is a "bigger" Bad Boy. Hee, hee!
