San Diego, CA

San Diego is the gem of Southern California and a welcoming alternative to the vastness of the LA Basin. In April I had a chance to visit with a friend of mine who lives in Baja California. We decided to meet up in San Diego, spend a few days touring the city, and then drive across the desert to her home in San Felipe.

If you only have a couple of days in this beautiful city and don't have a huge budget, here are a few suggestions for how to spend your time.

Be sure to visit Old Town San Diego, AKA the "birthplace" of San Diego. This park includes a main plaza, exhibits, museums, living history demonstrations and lots of restaurants and shops. It's free and parking is plentiful...

If you're a fan of victorian architecture, then take a stroll through and marvel at the finely restored colorful homes on display in Heritage Park Victorian Village. Two of the houses are BB inns and one of them contains a darling store and even serves "high tea"...

Visit the Mormon Historic Battalion Site to learn about this military unit that marched 2,000 miles across the U.S. to San Diego - also free...

Before heading into Balboa Park, check out the Spanish Art Center. It features fine arts and crafts from San Diego's renowned artists. It's very colorful and also free of charge...

Balboa Park is much too big to see in only one day - it has 1,200 acres of open parks, recreation areas, museums, gardens, buildings, art galleries, restaurants, and shops. If you enjoy Spanish-style architecture, walk the length of El Prado, a long, wide promenade that runs through the park's center. It's simply amazing and also free; you really feel like you're in Spain!

If fog hasn't rolled in yet, drive across the toll-free SD-Coronado Bridge and watch the sunset from the beach and then check out the beautiful Coronado Hotel...

If you like shopping and food, then don't miss out on Historic Downtown San Diego.
Apparently that's where all the nightlife is, too...

Catch another sunset from one of the many harbors where you can enjoy views of the boats and city skyline...

There's so much more to see in San Diego. I guess that's why I'll have to try to go back another time. It's no wonder this lovely city is so popular among college students and retirees.

Next stop: Mexico.

Even though I grew up in Southern California, San Diego is the only county I'd live in if I had to move back. But even then, I'd go kicking and screaming. Definitely a northern californian girl now. Enjoyed your Baja photos.
