Xian, China

After leaving behind the heavenly bright blue skies we were fortunate to have on our last two days in Beijing, we moved on to Xian, known as the eternal city. There we were unfortunately greeted by a gray, smoggy canopy. I've never seen so much construction going on in one place either. It's a rapidly expanding city with a diverse industrial base. Most people, however, come to Xian to visit those intriguing little terra cotta warriors which were discovered by farmers in 1974. There are many other sights of interest, though, and I think Xian could be a wonderful place for further exploration, especially if the atmospheric conditions were just right.

The Great Wild Goose Pagoda...

Next stop: Guilin.

I was watching the Formula One race they just had in China and the pollution was so bad you could barely see the other end of the straight-away. The announcers said that the promoters asked for the factories to shut down for the event as they did for the Olympics, but they refused to do so. I can see the smog in your photos. A shame, but I suppose we're no less guilty here in the U.S.

We were in Beijing a month before the Olympics, and the skies were just like these you found in Xian. I don't remember much in Xian except the warriors, because I was having one of my off-days healthwise. So great to see your photos of the city and its people. Thanks!

Wonderful photos. I've never been anywhere in China. Is the air quality always like that in Xian. I've heard it is very bad in Beijing.
